AKSU suspends 200-level student for calling VC foolish

A 200 level student of Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, Joy Nkanang, has been suspended “indefinitely” for allegedly calling the university vice-chancellor, foolish on Facebook.

Joy who is a student of the Department of Performing Arts was suspended on May 9th 2019.

Joy who is from Akwa Ibom State, had taken to Facebook on May 5 writing;

“AKSU what is happening? A dry cleaners shop was robbed last night along college road….”

Reports have it that Joy had been lamenting about the rise in cult activities and insecurity around the school environment.

AKSU suspends 200-level student for calling VC foolish

Joy further stated in her comment section:

“No…. we don’t want to spoil the schools image…. foolish vc,”

The attention of the university was drawn to her “foolish vc” comment which was described in a letter to her as  “gross misconduct” and a “breach of matriculation oath”.

Joy Nkanang has been barred from entering the campus until the investigation on the statement is concluded.

The suspension letter confirmed that Joy Nkanang admitted before university officials that she did call the vice chancellor foolish.

A source who witnessed the meeting proceedings, however, stated that Joy was not allowed to make any comment when she appeared before the officials.

“They just asked her where she’s from in Akwa Ibom and who her father is.

“At the end of the meeting, they told her she is dismissed from school. She knelt down and begged, but nobody listened to her,” the source said.

Akaninyene Ibanga, the spokesperson of the Akwa Ibom State University, said Ms Nkanang may be recalled or expelled from the university when the case is “determined”.
