Pwadimadi Zeham, a 26-year-old resident of Mbulawa Ward in Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has been arrested for allegedly taping a four-year-old minor.
The latest arrest was coming after the arrest, last Tuesday, of another suspected rapist, Ezekiel Mahai, 44, by the state police command for allegedly raping a 12-year-old physically challenged girl in Prakwanta Village, Gombi Local Government Area.
The state police sposkeman, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, in a statement on Sunday, said the latest arrest was another breakthrough in the fight against sexual violence on women and children and cautioned parents to keep an eye on their children at all times.
“The Adamawa State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that its fight against sexual violence upon women and children has extended to Numan, where detectives attached to Numan Division arrested one Pwadimadi Zeham, a 26-year-old resident of Mbulawa Ward, Numan Local Government Area, for raping a 4-year-old baby.
“The suspect who happened to be a close neighbour to the victim took her into his room on the 23/7/2020 and had carnal knowledge of her.
“The mother, upon noticing the unusual crying from her little baby, closely monitored and observed a foreign sperm into her private part, hence she reported. The victim is now undergoing medical screenings while the suspect has been taken into custody for investigation and prosecution.
“The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adeyanju, commended members of the public, especially those that keyed into the fight against sexual violence against women and children and call on parents/guardians to closely monitor their wards and equally sensitise them to keep a distance from people of such character,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, respite has come the way of Grace, the 12-year-old physically challenged who was raped by Ezekiel Mahai, last Tuesday, as a foundation has promised to support her to get justice.
Mrs Deborah Birdling, the founder of Debbie Kauna Foundation, in a statement on Sunday, said efforts were being made to give Grace proper medical and psychological care and also ensure that the rapist was brought to justice.
She said Grace was born as a normal child, but lack of good medical care and attention turned her into a disabled child Grace at age 12, adding that she fell sick while in Primary Six and, for three years, could not be taken care of in a good hospital due to lack of finance.
Birdling said as a result of the sickness, Grace could not use her hands and legs effectively and eventually lost her sight, disclosing that her mother left her in the house, in search of local medicines from her kinsmen at Prakwanta Village.
“On the 18th of July, Grace’s mother left her in the care of her family to get money from her husband for Grace’s medical care.
“On returning home, wondering why the house was loudly quiet and empty, she found Mr Ezekiel pulling up his trouser trying to hide behind the door, wondering what was happening.
“She was confused at his behaviour, but immediately noticed her daughter half-naked on the bed, helplessly crying.
“While she was trying to help her sick daughter on the bed, Mr Ezekiel ran out. She ran after him, shouting and the few youths coming from farm caught him.
“There are minors suffering from different impairments and are being abused and maltreated daily. Rape isn’t just towards the disabled, but they have been more victims. They can’t ran, fight back, scream or recall who their perpetrator is,” she said.
