The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday in Abuja, settled for Osogbo, the Osun State capital, as the venue for the conduct of the south west zonal congress of the party.
The decision of Osogbo as the venue was reached after closed door deliberations between Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and former governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, who have been having a running battle over an acceptable venue for the zonal congress of the party.
It was decided after the meeting, which had in attendance other stakeholders of the party in Abuja among others that
“the South West Zonal Congress of our great party is scheduled for Monday, April 12, 2021 in Oshogbo, Osun state capital.
“The PDP national leadership assures of working with all stakeholders to achieve a seamless and unifying congress of our great party in the SouthWest zone.
“The PDP urge all leaders of our party, critical stakeholders and teeming members of our party in the Southwest and the nation at large to be accordingly guided.
“The PDP commends the spirit of understanding, unanimity and selflessness exhibited by our leaders and critical stakeholders in the South West in the deliberation of issues related to the zone.
It would be recalled that Governor Makinde of Oyo State, had warned of dare consequences for the party should the congress be postponed or moved out of Ibadan, where the zonal office of the party is located.
However, with the decision of the National Leadership of the party to move the congress of the party outside Ibadan, in order to pacify the Ayo Fayose group of the party, who sighted insecurity in Ibadan, it is left to be seen how Makinde would be able to deliver his preferred candidate, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja as the zonal chairman of the party.
