Youths from the South South geo-political zone, under the aegis of Committed Youth For Peace and Development of the Niger Delta Region, on Friday called on Senators- elect to cast their votes in support of the candidacy of Senator Godswill Akpabio as the president of the10th Senate, just as they also declared their total rejection of the aspirations of Senators Uzor Kalu Abdulaziz Yari and former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, for the plum job.
They made the declaration after the congress of the group in Port Harcourt, where they urged all Nigerians to rise in support of the South South to produce the President of the 10th Senate.
A statement signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Dickson Elele, says in part: “all committed Youths of the Niger Delta are solidly behind the ambition of Senator Akpabio as the region had never produced the President of the Senate since 1999. They condemned attempts by some divisive elements within and outside the APC to infiltrate the ranks of the youths for their selfish interests.
According to the group, “there is no doubt that Senator Godswill Akpabio has the competence and capacity to lead the 10th Senate. His uncommon transformation of Akwa Ibom State speaks volumes about his knack for development.
“We have no doubt that working with the President-elect, he will replicate this development in Nigeria. The country will witness a new lease of developments with effective legislation to turn things around for the better.
” We are all in agreement that Kalu and Oshiomhole are not the best the southern people can present for the office of the Senate President and we hereby call for their rejection by the Senators elect. On the other hand, the aspiration of Yari is a misplaced and inordinate ambition that could tear this country into shreds if allowed.
“He is very insensitive to political realities. How can we have the President-elect and the vice president elect from same faith and still want to have a Muslim as the Senate President? His aspiration smacks of insensitivity and should be rejected by all well-meaning members of the Senate for the continued unity of this country, ” the group stressed.
