President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has promised that the 10th Senate, under his leadership will make laws that would promote health needs of Nigerians especially, the less privileged.
Akpabio, who is representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District, made the promise on Saturday, while flagging-off Free Medical Outreach for the Senatorial District and Akwa Ibom State in general, tagged: The Renewed Hope Medical Outreach”.
The Outreach which is a collaboration between the Senate President and President Bola Tinubu, according to Akpabio, will be taken to designated centers within the 10 council areas of Akwa Ibom North West District.
Addressing the crowd of rural beneficiaries at Ikot Ekpene Plaza, venue for the event, Akpabio who was represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff Dr. Saviour Enyiekere noted that free medical outreach is meant for those who are unable to afford regular medical services hence, the decision to initiate the Outreach for the rural populace.
Coming barely two days to his 2024 birthday, Akpabio said he will ensure that no one who needed medical attention is left out of the free services.
“I promised to bring dividends of democracy to my people while I was campaigning for their votes, this is one of the fulfillment of such promises.
“The outreach will last for the next few weeks and will be taken to designated centers in the 10 local government councils in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District. Free Medical Outreach is meant for the less privileged and vulnerable persons who cannot afford the regular medical bills.
“The 10th Assembly will ensure that laws are made to support health needs of the people, especially those in the rural communities.
“I want to urge beneficiaries to provide accurate information concerning their health conditions, to avoid unnecessary emergency situations”, Akpabio said
Enyiekere, who doubled as the chairman of the occasion also noted: “Today is a very special day for us. We want to thank the Senate President for this development and the many other projects he is putting in place. This program is meant to last for weeks. It is also inline with the campaign promises we made to the constituents when we came to solicit their support.
“We are trying to make it possible for it to be a yearly affair for our people to access free medical services in Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District”.
Dr Enyiekere encouraged his constituents to open up to the doctors and be truthful in their conversations regarding their health in order to aid proper diagnosis and treatment.
In his remarks, the lead consultant, Dr Yinka Osho, noted that “everyone has numbers”, and it is important to timely check what the numbers of our bodies are saying so as to detect any anomaly and regulate them to keep optimal health.
Dr Osho added that in the team of medical professionals were optometrists, dentists and doctors who are well-equipped to attend to people at no cost, courtesy the sponsor, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Eye checks and free eyeglasses, teeth checks and flushing, malaria and typhoid test and treatments, plus HIV Test and management to be directed by Dr Imaobong Ukpah amongst others are in the package.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to our Correspondent expressed appreciation to the Senate President for the good gesture, saying that their votes were not in vain.They also promised to vote him again as their representative in the National Assembly.
Over five hundred people gathered at the popular Ikot Ekpene Plaza for the free medical services.
Representatives from World Health Organization (WHO) were part of the outreach as some of the events marking the 2024 World AIDS Day.
