The Rivers State government has described as untrue the story making the rounds that primary schools in the state will be reopened on Monday, 12 October, 2020.

This is contained in a press release signed by the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Education, Sir
Chidi Adiele, who said the information is a falsehood.

Recalled that the secondary schools, tertiary institutions and vocations institutions in the state reopened on 5 October, 2020 on the order of Governor Nyesom Wike, while no date was announced for the resumption of primary schools.

Adiele, in the press release, wrote: The attention of the Rivers State Ministry of Education has been drawn to fake news making rounds that primary schools in the state will reopen 12 October, 2020.

“The ministry states as follows: that the information is fake and should be discountenanced; that schools in the state resumed 5th of October as approved by the State Executive Council;

“That primary schools were exempted from reopening, following expert medical advice;

“That the ministry shall make a formal announcement regarding the date when nursery and primary schools in the state will reopen. Under the Nigerian Constitution, every state of the federation is at liberty to run its schools.”

The Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Education therefore urged parents and guardians not to take the viral fake news serious, “as it is peddled by mischievous people.”
