Elisha Ishaku Abbo, the controversial Nigerian Senator who assaulted a nursing mother in an adult toy shop in Abuja, was denied admission Nigerian Naval Training College, Onne, Port Harcourt in 2004 for being an HIV positive.

Mr Abbo, who represents Adamawa North Senatorial District, was shown in the CCTV footage, published by Premium Times slapping a nursing mother who was trying to calm him down not to beat another woman.

The assault, which occurred on May 11, 2019, was done in the presence of an armed policeman, who rather than assist the victim, arrested her.

On February 9, 2004, Cliff Elisha Ishaku, has taken the authorities of the Nigerian Naval Training College, Onne, Port Harcourt to court for allegedly denying him admission into the college on the grounds of his health status despite passing the recruitment test.

In a legal action instituted on his behalf by the vice chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Chapter, Barrister Jude Okeke, at the Abuja Federal High Court, Ishaku is seeking among others, a declaration that his withdrawal from the School, by the Naval College and the Ministry of Defence on account of his testing positive to HIV virus is illegal, unlawful and breach of his fundamental right to personal dignity.

It is however unclear whether he continued with the case.

On February 23, 2019, Mr Abbo was elected as the Senator representing Adamawa North, having polled 79,337 votes as against Binta Masi Garba of the APC, who scored the closest votes with 63,219.
